The College Centre provision is accommodated on the first floor, alongside a communal area and an independent living space equipped with everyday equipment and technology. In the College Centre we build on experiences gained in the Secondary classes by extending opportunities for the development of student choice, developing student independence and social skills, and providing opportunities for vocational/ work-related learning.
The aim is to prepare young people for their adult life; students follow a personalised learning pathway enabling the young person to foster interests and aspirations whilst practising life and independence skills in a safe and secure setting in order to maximise their potential and lead happy and productive lives as adults.
The curriculum offer is adapted for students of all abilities but the emphasis lies in developing personal care skills, making choices and learning to take responsibility for everyday tasks and routines. For students who require the highest levels of support to achieve their personal goals the priority may be for them to accept support, become more aware and involved in the world around them, carry out simple tasks and receive individual therapeutic support as required. Students who remain at a pre-subject specific level will also be encouraged to become as independent as possible, whilst remaining the the Engagement Model, and have their own opportunities to pick up accreditations and qualification.
All students have the opportunity to work and participate in visits to a range of settings, including but not limited to, Frederick Holmes Oasis Café, Olroyd’s Corner (Woodmansey Garden Centre), museums and shopping centres. Where possible, we aim to work with local businesses to set up work experience opportunities.
Students in the Secondary classes begin to think about their Preparation for Adulthood by participating in joint projects aimed at developing collaboration, team work and independence skills. These students also get the opportunity to put these skills towards to the ASDAN Preparing for Adulthood: Transition Challenge accreditations.
A range of accreditations and qualifications are offered to our students that support their personal targets and curriculum. Depending on the students’ abilities and interests, these have previously included;
ASDAN Preparing for Adulthood:
Towards Independence accreditations in a variety of topics (Horticulture, Performing Arts, Baking, Independent Living and Basic Skills)
ASDAN Personal Progress qualifications (PPQ) at an Award, Certificate, Extended Certificate or Diploma level
AQA Entry Level Functional Skills in Maths and/ or English
ASDAN Employability qualifications
ASDAN Personal and Social Development (PSD) qualifications
