At Frederick Holmes School our curriculum has been carefully planned to ensure that it meets the needs of all our children and young people. Subject knowledge and content has been considered in order that pupils may be able to link learning to their own experiences, making progress towards matched End Goals.
Class groups that follow subject specific learning follow a two-year rolling cycle across Early Years & KS1, Lower Primary, Upper Primary, Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary. Post 16 students and those who are working at a pre-subject specific model (on the Engagement Model) are considered under separate curriculums.
Pupils are divided into class groups according to their cognitive development so that learning can be pitched at the right level for individual and group work.
The broad and balanced subject specific knowledge delivered is based upon the National Curriculum, adapted to meet individual needs and abilities. All National Curriculum subjects have been considered, with the exception of Modern Foreign Languages as greater emphasis is placed on Early Reading, Communication, Phonological Awareness and Phonics, where appropriate.
The secondary age students also have access to our independent living and food technology spaces to begin to encourage and support the development of independent functional living skills. The Lower and Upper Secondary classes also work together on termly projects aimed at developing their social interaction skills and preparation for transition and adulthood.
Physical Education, swimming, hydrotherapy and physical management sessions continue to take place to support our young people with their physical development.
