Frederick Holmes School aims to promote independence and teach the relevant skills to enable all students to develop their independence, in preparation for adulthood, and become as independent as they are possibly able.
Our students have access to our independent living and food technology rooms to begin to encourage and support the development of independent functional living skills. Through the trust, students may also have other opportunities such as visiting an off-site flat/ accommodation to put their skills in a real-life context.
Through their personalised curriculum offer and targets, our students are given the opportunity to acquire a range of skills to prepare them for Post 19 transition and adulthood. The students are taught cooking, cleaning, health and safety, personal hygiene, money management skills and much more.
Using the specialised rooms and equipment our students have the opportunity to make different meals, including breakfasts and a main meal. They have the chance to learn the fundamental skills of making a hot drink using the different appliances available to them.
In addition, we give our students the chance to develop other important life skills like learning to use a washing machine and tumble dryer. They learn the importance of household jobs like polishing, cleaning the floor and how to clean the bathroom. There are opportunities to practise these skills out of school at a local flat the students visit each week.
Other provision includes independent travel training offered by trained members of staff for appropriate student and community visits.
