The school has a poly-tunnel on site, giving our pupils and students the opportunity to experience planting, nurturing and harvesting crops. With the planned new build on site, the poly-tunnel will be repositioned to a different area in the coming year. Students are involved in the development and maintenance of the Forest School Area and several accessible planters positioned around the site.
Over the past few years, we have made links with Oldroyd’s Corner, part of Woodmansey Garden Centre, which we visit once a week. While there, the students experience a range of activities from making bird boxes to planting a range of seeds to distribute to the wider community. Students also have the opportunity to interact with other professionals working at the garden centre and members of the public, building on their communication and work experience skills. Students enjoy the opportunity to develop other cross-curricular skills such as measures, money, cooking and sustainability, where students are taught how to use their produce for a purpose.
Students also have the opportunity to develop entrepreneur skills through the horticulture programme as they produce, sell and share handmade or homegrown gifts throughout the year. This includes pressed flower art and Christmas Wreaths in the winter; Mother’s Day flowers, vegetables and a variety of potted plants and flowers through the spring and summer.
