Early Years

The Early Years Department at Frederick Holmes School delivers the EYFS Curriculum and includes pupils beginning in Nursery at age two through to those in Year 2, aged seven. We plan fun and exciting activities, which help children with a range of physical and developmental difficulties to be as independent as possible and move their learning forward.

Our aim is to create an all-inclusive foundation stage that emphasises the importance of communication and PSE. This creates opportunities for children to flourish and make discoveries in the safety of an engaging, immersive environment.

We want our children to be excited and motivated to learn through rich and challenging learning experiences; opportunities to explore and take risks, and first-hand experiences. We have high ambitions for all of our children and recognise that children have different starting points to their learning.

The curriculum itself is divided into seven areas of learning and development.

Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building the capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive. These are the prime areas of learning:
• Communication and Language
• Physical Development
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We then support children in four specific areas; through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:

• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the world
• Expressive arts and design

Our curriculum is flexible and the majority of learning is child led and play based. However, we also run specific communication sessions and physical management groups tailored to meet individual pupil’s needs. We are an early adopter school which means we are currently using the newly released development matters, ahead of it becoming statutory in September 2021.

Our staff are highly knowledgeable, dedicated and enthusiastic. They are keen to get to know you and your child and are always available to answer your questions. Children in the foundation stage work on topics and themes similar to those studied throughout the school so they can be fully involved with whole school activities where appropriate. The children are regularly assessed to monitor their progress and to enable accurate plans to be made for future teaching and learning. We have lots of fun! All of our learning is very hands on, with a play-based focus. Our mornings are more structured and we do numeracy, phonics and reading each day. Our afternoons are free choice, the children choose their own learning from a selection of carefully planned, topic related activities to cover each of the areas of development.
