As part of our 14-19 offer, pupils in Post 16 have personalised learning opportunities to study courses that they are interested in and develop skills useful for further education and life beyond Freddies.
When completing the ASDAN accreditation ‘Photography / Multi-Media’ students become confident in using cameras to take pictures around an area of their interest. In the past, this has included a minibus tour of Hull to take photographs of landmarks and street art.
Over the course of the school year and with the season changes, students venture outside to photograph and evidence natural variations to create pieces of art and time lapses. Future plans include photographing the construction of the new SEN Free School to timeline the changes to the landscape.
Students are then taught to uploaded their images onto computers and how to use different editing programmes in order to enhance pictures, changing backgrounds and colours. The students become independent in this work and develop their individual preferences and style.
Frederick Holmes is developing partnerships between other special schools and colleges in Hull in order to share skills and facilities. Pupils have visited St Mary’s College to view the photography workshops and art work produced by other students.
We have been able to facilitate this accreditation with generous donations of old cameras from staff members, families and the local community. This allows students to become familiar with the different shapes and sizes available, allowing students to further develop and apply the skills they have learnt.
